My thoughts based upon each day's One Year Bible reading selection.

Under the SON
Contributed by: Steve Jones   on 9/2/2008

From the Old Testament portion of today's One Year Bible reading:

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3
Everything is meaningless. What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?

Pretty grim perspective...but very common. An Old Testament scholar once taught me that the phrase " under the sun" indicates the author expressing himself from the perspective of a godless person. I don't know if that's true...but it's worth thinking about.

As I read the hopelessness and futility expressed in these first three chapters of Ecclesiastes I couldn't help but think - what a difference the resurrection makes. Solomon (the author), for all his wisdom, didn't know what we know about Jesus and the resurrection.

Contrast the words of Paul in the New Testament portion of today's OYB reading. Paul doesn't deny the harsh realities of life on planet earth - but neither is he defeated by them. What a difference it makes to be under the SON.

II Corinthians 6:10
Dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

I pray that today you will live uner the SON. Please pray that for me
