Eric Price, Technology Ptnrs: IBM's first PC & now
Contributed by: Vero Beach Computer Group on 8/14/2008

What:
Guest speaker Eric Price, president and owner of Technology Partners, contributed to the Vero Beach Computer Group with his time, energy and knowledge for at least ten years in the 90's as President and Treasurer. He will discuss personal computing from the first IBM PC to where we are today.

"In 1990, I was working as the computer specialist at Radio Shack in Miracle Mile at its original location on 7th Avenue. At the time, it was a very unusual store. It wasn't a franchise, but it was only half owned by the company. The other half had been owned and managed for years by Don Schultz. The store also was one of the very few in the country that had a dedicated business computer department. Although Radio Shack had a business computer center briefly in Fort Pierce, I was able to earn the respect of many loyal small businesses in the area. Of course, at the time, my goal was just to make a living for my family.
As I recall, Gene Outhout was instrumental in inviting me to speak at the Vero Beach Computer Group around this time. The meeting was held at the Mosquito Control District offices on Oslo Road east of US-1. A few short months later, the group president, Glenn Dodd, was killed while on vacation. George Blanton assumed the presidency. This is about the time which I began helping out. The Indian River Public Main Library had just moved into its new facilities and I was helping them set up public-use computers. Mary Powell, the head librarian and manager of the facility, allowed us to move our meetings to their new well-equipped auditorium - if we held classes before our meetings and helped out during the week as volunteers upstairs with the public's use of the computers. A sort of help desk by walking around. Our meetings began at 7pm.
I taught classes on various topics from 6pm to 7pm. We moved our meeting place a few times during the years, but now it's back at the Main Library. I started a business in 1993 and by 2001, my participation in the group diminished. I was awarded the Glenn Dodd Award which included complementary lifetime membership for my contributions.
Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Vero Beach Computer Group. Membership could see improvements and there are still many in the area that didn't know it exists. I'd like to help resolve both of these problems. The group is run by very dedicated volunteers and serves a great need for finding ways to integrate technology in our lives with less frustration and more enjoyment."
Where: Indian River County Main Library, Media Room, 1600 21st St., Vero Beach
When: 7 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.
