The community-wide, nondenominational Social Justice Film Series continues its theme of persecution and intolerance at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach. The film to be shown and discussed on Sunday, November 2, at 7 p.m. is a 2007 award-winning documentary about genocide in Darfur.
Now in its third year, the Social Justice series is held on the first Sunday of each month. It is open to the public, there is no admission charge, and reservations are not necessary.
The November documentary, using photographs and first-hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle, takes the viewer on a journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan. There the Janjaweed (or "devil on a horse") militia is armed and funded by the Arab-dominant Sudanese government, with the mission of wiping out Darfur's largely black, non-Arab residents.
The United Nations estimates that the conflict has left as many as 500,000 dead from violence and disease. Two-and-a-half million more are homeless. But what is shocking isn't that it happened but that it continues unabated. Steidle himself is transformed from soldier to observer to witness and, finally, to passionate activist and moral hero.
Becky Sims will introduce the film. Paul Amaru will facilitate the discussion. The Fellowship Fair Trade Corner will be open one-half hour before and after the film.
