Students Hone Skills at Exploration Station
Contributed by: Cynthia Falardeau on 9/16/2007

The Education Foundation of Indian River County and the Environmental Learning Center hosted the first annual Exploration Station on Saturday, September 15, 2007. More than 50 students, parents and teachers attended two sessions held at the Environmental Learning Center on the Wabasso Island.

The purpose of the program was to teach and inspire students and parents how to create a successful science project. Student presenters Charlotte Morse, William Morse, Kimberly Zerega, Delaney Polk, and Taylor Tench shared why they enjoy participating in the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, Mrs. Sharon Morgan, a veteran science fair parent explained how her family had benefited from involvement in the science fair.

Education Foundation volunteer and Gifford Middle School science teacher Pat Hiser lead the two hour sessions. Participants learned that a good project begins with a topic that interests the student, followed by a clear understanding of how to apply the scientific method. Mr. Hiser explained, "So often students and parents want the magic answer or idea to create a winning project." "The best projects begin with an idea initiated by the student and involve lots of research and experimentation," added Hiser.

Participants got to apply their new found knowledge during the sessions. Dr. Scott Ferguson of Atlantic Turf & Ornamental Consulting, Ms. Vanessa Spero of the Environmental Learning Center, Mrs. Margaret Ingram and Mrs. Michele Pedlow of Beachland Elementary, Mr. Bob Whalen of Citrus Elementary, Mrs. Joan Frary of Masters Academy, Mrs. Mary Lewis of Saint Helen's Catholic School, and Mrs. Debra Morse an Education Foundation volunteer all helped facilitate the classroom experiments. Boys and Girls Club Youth Volunteer Corps also assisted at the event.

The Education Foundation of Indian River County is the sole administrator of the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair (IRRSEF). The Education Foundation partners with local organizations and businesses to plan and present the regional fair. The IRRSEF serves all Indian River County public, private, parochial and home school students. The sixteenth annual Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Gifford Middle School.
