UPCOMING SYMPOSIUM ON ADHD & LEARNING DIFFERENCES

Parents and educators will have the opportunity to hear the latest information about ADHD and learning differences in children in an upcoming event, "Strategies for Success - A Symposium on ADHD and Learning Differences" to be held on Thursday evening, October 11 and all day Friday, October 12th, 2007 in Vero Beach.

The Thursday evening forum is specifically geared toward parents - Judy Linger, M.D. Director of Child and Adolescent Services for the Center for Emotional and Behavioral Health (CEBH) at Indian River Medical Center will be speaking on Medical and Social Aspects of Inattention. This will be followed by a panel discussion feturing Dr. Linger, Ms. Deena Dean, LMHC, Outpatient Services Manager at CEBH, Dr. Jamie Robison, District Psychologist with the School District of Indian River County, Ms. Toni Gallo, BCBA, District Behavior Analyst with the School District, and others.

This forum is free to the public and will be held at The Performing Arts Center at Vero Beach High School from 6-8 p.m Parents are encouraged to resigister for the evening forum and submit questions for the panel at

The following day, a full-day symposium for teachers, parents, social workers and community agency staff will be held at the Richardson Center at the IRCC Mueller Campus from 8 a.m until 3:15 p.m. Featured speaker will be Dr. Mark Riddle, Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry with Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Riddle will discuss recent research on ADHD to help organize our thinking about this disorder and use real life examples to illustrate effective treatment therapies, including behavior management, medications (positives and negatives) and school programming - basic principles from a psychiatrist's perspective. Break out sessions throughout the day will feature local experts presenting on such topics as managing ADHD across the lifespan, building a foundation for character development, classroom behavior management, the impact of sleep disorders on students' behavior, the importance of language development in the reading process, teaching self-monitoring for planning and organization, working with pre-K students, motivating unmotivated learners, and sensory integration issues, using art and movement to facilitate learning and more.

The Symposium is presented by the School Psychologists of the Student Services Department of the Indian River County School District. The symposium is made possible by grants from the Robert F. and Eleonora W. McCabe Foundation, Inc., The Mental Health Collaborative of Indian River County, Indian River Community College, United Way of Indian River County, Suncoast Mental Health Center, the School District of Indian River County, the Press Journal, and others.

Registration for the Friday event is limited. Teachers may resigter with Staff Development. Others should call 564-5950 to register.
