Education Foundation Awards Grant to Provide Teacher Tablet Computers

The Education Foundation of Indian River County awarded its final grant for the 2007-2008 school year. A check for $6,864.00 was presented to Dr. Harry La Cava, Superintendent of the School District of Indian River County and Bruce Green, Educational Accountability and Instructional Data Analyst. The funds will be used to purchase four teacher tablet computers.

The grant was made possible by the Florida Legislatures Matching Grant Program. The Education Foundation raised private matching dollars from the John's Island Foundation, Bank of America and Citigroup. Thirty-nine grants totaling $105,000 have been awarded to the School District of Indian River County this year.

The computers are part of the district's Technology Integration Initiative. The School District of Indian River County recognizes that in order to prepare students for the success of the 21st Century, teachers and students have a critical need for technology resources and the knowledge to use those resources successfully.
"Today's students have been immersed in technology since birth, "explained Mr. Green. "They communicate with cell phones, text messaging and on-line chat rooms. They are creators of their own digital content and expect 24/7 access to technology. The traditional instructional model no longer meets their needs. Simply walking into a classroom requires them to power down - at the precise moment they should be energized for learning!" added Mr. Green.

The teacher tablet computers will be used in the second phase of the districts Technology Integration Initiative. A pilot program will involve 18 teachers. Eight classrooms will have a laptop computer for each student. DyKnow software will be used on each tablet. With this software teachers will be able to see the screens of each student in the classroom. Students will be able to answer questions that will be collected on the teacher's tablet computer.

Dr. La Cava commented, "Indian River County is on the cutting edge of technology. We could not have accomplished this without the support of our Education Foundation."
