New Teachers Sharpen Skills at "First Days of School New Teacher Orientation"

The Education Foundation of Indian River County and National City Bank sponsored the School District of Indian River County's "First Days of School New Teacher Orientation." This year's annual event took place on Monday, August 4th through the 6th at the Indian River State College's Richardson Center.

A total of eighty teachers participated in the three day workshop. Marsha Van Arman of the SDIRC's Staff Development office led the team of six tenured teacher presenters. Adam Faust and Allison Bailey both of Citrus Elementary School taught the elementary school participants. Katie Collier of Sebastian River Middle School and James Thimmer of Oslo Middle School skilled the middle school group. Dian Bebber of Vero Beach High School and Michael Hall of Sebastian River High School trained the high school group.

The new teachers enjoyed meeting their peers. In addition, they will be assigned a mentor to help guide them through the new school year. "We know that this program is essential to retaining new teachers, "commented Mrs. Van Arman. "This workshop gives them the skills and support to begin the school year with confidence. This is a great benefit to the students, "added Van Arman.

The Education Foundation provided a $5,000 grant to fund the purchase of workshop supplies, instructional materials and facility fees. In addition, the Foundation devoted staff time to help organize the event and recruit additional community support. Local businesses donated door prizes and small gifts that were distributed in National City tote bags.

National City Bank served as the major sponsor of the workshop. Their financial support provided meals and $50.00 gift cards to first year teachers and workshop presenters. National City Vice President and Miracle Mile Branch Manger Tina M. Nicholson commented, "National City is proud to be part of this event. We believe in education because we know what a difference it makes. We feel that we are part of the educational community and want to continue in this role to make a difference."

The Education Foundation of Indian River County's mission is to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for all students and teachers, both public and private, through the efficient allocation of resources and effective fundraising. The Foundation operates separately from the local school district. The majority of all funding is from private individuals and grant assistance. This unique structure allows the Foundation to direct funding to where it is needed most, thus avoiding the bureaucracy that often comes with federal or restricted revenue.
