Local Science Experts Help Students Advance

The Education Foundation of Indian River County and the Environmental Learning Center joined forces to present the 6th Annual Observation Station - A Program for Aspiring Young Scientists. More than 165 middle school students attended the mini-science conference held Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Gifford Middle School.

Students, parents and teachers attended three thirty-minute workshops. Fourteen local research scientists, doctors and science professionals gave workshops on the various science fair categories. In addition, practical sessions were offered to teach students the science fair basics.

The Education Foundation and the Environmental Learning Center would like to thank the following presenters who gave their time and talents to inform and inspire students, parents and teachers:
Kim Colstad of Coastal Technology Corporation, Cheryl Dunne of Syngenta Crop Protection Corporation, Gwen Fichtelman of the Education Foundation, Jarred Huffman of Florida Institute of Technology, Rakesh Jain of Sygenta Crop Protection Corporation, Jim Kirkpatrick of the City of Vero Beach, Linda Lawson of the City of Vero Beach, Fred Mazza of PaleoDiscoveries, Dr. Eileen and Karen Monuszko, Dr. Attila Ondi of Florida Institute of Technology, Sarah Rhodes-Ondi of the Environmental Learning Center and Michael Walther of Coastal Technology Corporation. We would also like to thank Principal Dave Kramek and Science Teacher Pat Hiser of Gifford Middle School for hosting the event.

The purpose of the outreach program is to inspire 6th through 8th grade students, teachers and parents to create winning science fair projects. The local presenters give information and resources to help. The program has proven to increase participation in the school based and regional science fairs. More than 10,000 students in grades K-12th grades will compete in school based fairs before a select 600 students advance to the Indian River Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The Education Foundation is the sole administrator of the regional fair that is held each year. The 17th Annual IRRSEF will be held January 31, 2009 at Gifford Middle School. The award ceremonies will be held on February 1, 2009 at Sebastian River High School's Performing Arts Center.

Currently, the Education Foundation is seeking volunteers to serve as judges and sponsors. To learn more visit: www.edfoundationirc.org or email: info@edfoundationirc.org.
