Sneaker Hop to Benefit Students in Need
Contributed by: Cynthia Falardeau on 9/29/2008

Let's Go to the Hop! The Sneaker Hop!

Let's go to the hop! The Sneaker Hop! Come join the Dwelling's Design Center for an old fashion soda shop event on November 6, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. This jukebox buster is a benefit for the Education Foundation of Indian River County's Sneaker Exchange Program.

You won't want to miss Gerry's Golden Oldies Dance Party and the Party Dolls. Besides foot-tapping tunes, you will enjoy the vintage cars and cooking demonstrations too. A donation of $20.00 admits you to the party. It also provides drinks, snacks, give-a-ways and much more! All proceeds benefit the Sneaker Exchange Program.

"Giving back is what it is all about, "commented Dwellings Design Owner Mike Garofalo. Mike and his wife Mary are regular volunteers of the Education Foundation's Sneaker Exchange Program. "The Education Foundation is grateful for the volunteer and financial support of the Dwelling Design Center team, "commented Education Foundation Board President Dan Bockhost. "Each week the Dwellings Design Center employees attend weekly Sneaker Exchanges helping more than 100 children in need each week," added Bockhorst.

The Sneaker Exchange Program began as a ground floor project of the Junior League of Indian River County in 1993. In 2002 the program moved to become a standalone program of the Education Foundation of Indian River County. The Education Foundation solely administers the program. Volunteers from Holy Cross Church and community programs volunteer their time to assist at weekly Sneaker Exchanges. Since the program's inception more than 14,000 students in grades Pre-K through 12th grades have been served by the program.

The Education Foundation partners with school coordinators in all School District of Indian River County Schools to indentify children in need. The Free and Reduced Lunch Report is used as a guide to select students in need. Elementary students take a bus to Payless ShoeSource to select a pair of new sneakers. Secondary students receive a voucher to select a new pair of sneakers on their own. More than 2,000 students are served by this effort each year.

The Sneaker Exchange Program is funded entirely by private donations and grants. To join this effort, please join us at the Sneaker Hop or send a donation to the Education Foundation's Sneaker Exchange Program: P.O. Box 7046, Vero Beach, Florida 32961 or you may donate online at: www.edfoundationirc.org.
