COLUMN SDIRC Adult Education

Free English and Citizenship Classes

Do you know someone whose native language is one other than English? Is he\she struggling to learn English? Adult and Community Education can help. We offer free English classes for speakers of other languages. Classes are offered in the evening at Fellsmere Elementary School, Citrus Elementary, Dodgertown Elementary, Sebastian River High School and Vero Beach High School's Freshman Learning Center. Also, the Fellsmere Elementary School site, assist those individuals who wish to earn their citizenship. Please share this information with those who may benefit from these classes. Climate Change and Alternative Energy

Adult Education goes GREEN! If you are interested in learning more about our environment and new thoughts on alternative energy, please join us for a 3-week class that will do just that. Topics that will be covered are biodiesel and straight vegetable oil, wind and solar energy, biogas and composting heaters, and green roof technology. Class will begin Nov. 9 th and run through the 30 th, students will attend class on Monday evenings, and the cost is $34.00. Interested persons can register now.

Certified Nursing Assistant Program

If you are interested in working as a nursing assistant, Adult Education has the training you need! We will offer a class running from Jan. 6 - March 5 th. Students will attend class Monday - Thursday from 8:00 - 3:00 p.m. Students will also be required to attend some Fridays for laboratory assignments. The cost for this 220-hour class is $781.00 and students are encouraged to register now as space is limited for this program. Payment plans are available for those who register early.

Medical Coding Program

For those students who have been anxiously awaiting the next Medical Coding class, it is here! Class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. beginning Jan. 13 and running through May. This is a fast paced class that will require much time and commitment. For those students who are up for the challenge, you may register now at the Adult Education office.

Evening Culinary Program

If you have always had a love of cooking and want to turn your hobby into a career, you may want to consider Adult Education's Culinary Program! Students will attend class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and alternate Saturdays. Class begins in January and successful students will leave with the skills and certificates needed to work in the food industry. Please call 564-4970 for more information or visit our office to register. Students rave about this class; it is fun, informational, and can be the start of a wonderful career!

Consult a full course schedule for times, dates, and course fees. The course schedule is available at the office, at area libraries, and on the web at ( www.indianriverschools.org). Gift certificates are available. Adult Education, a division of the Indian River County School District, is at 1426 19 th St., downtown Vero Beach.
