Through funding provided by the Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District, the county's Sustainability Committee recently provided recycle bins for use at Storm Grove Middle School, the county's newest and only "green" school. Larger bins were provided for each of the classrooms, as well as smaller bins for under the desks of administration and office personnel, both for paper recycling. In addition, 32-gallon garbage cans will also be placed around campus for bottle and aluminum can recycling.
"Having these bins helps us to instill the habit of recycling in both our students and faculty, which is certainly an important aspect of being a green school," said Mr. Shawn O'Keefe, SGMS Principal.
The IRC Sustainability Committee is a task force whose mission is to encourage and support sustainability efforts county wide. Storm Grove Middle, which welcomed its first 900 students on August 24th, is built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards, although it does not have the official designation.
