Unique Door Mural Welcomes High School Students
Contributed by: Jeremy Baker on 9/7/2008

Question: What's the most important room in every school? Answer: The library of course! And this year the library at Indian River Charter High School has a brand new look thanks to Senior Michelle Trent. Michelle won the National Library Week Door Decorating Contest last year with her inspired "Get Lost In Your Library" design.

The full door mural reveals an image of the earth as seen from outer space while books and computer screens float around it. "I thought it would be cool to do a space design because when you read you can really loose yourself in the book" says Michelle. Other fun touches in the design include a computer screen showing the actual home page from the IRCHS web site and hard cover books with titles dedicated to Kristen Simpson, Michelle's homebase teacher, and Diane Bainter, the school librarian. "I wanted to put something in the painting about two of my favorite teachers, so one book is titled "Kristen Simpson's Workout Guide" and the other book is called "Mrs. Bainter's Reads".

Michelle worked four hours a week on the mural for most of last semester, using her break times in between classes to sketch out and paint the main entrance to the library.
