Black Belts Receive Scholarships
Contributed by: Cathy Watkins on 5/20/2009

High School graduation is a proud time for high school seniors and their families. Having completed their first stage of education, the students look forward to challenging themselves yet again, this time with a college education.
We here at the Vero Beach Karate Association support that decision, and have chosen to help these students pursue their goals of furthering their educational careers. Recently, Head Instructor Bill Willis awarded $14,000 in college scholarships to 7 graduating seniors who are also Black Belts of our Association. Some of these students started their martial arts training with us when they were just 5 years old. Since then, they have grown into fine young ladies and gentlemen, while also achieving the rank of Black Belt. Some of these students are even second and third degree black belts!
Included in these 7 students is a young man who resides in New York. For 10 years Patrick Burbano has been visiting us each summer and working extra hard to be able to achieve a phenomenal goal: Black Belt.
Over the yearsthe Vero Beach Karate Association has awarded graduating seniors $140,000. The amount we give varies upon the level of black belt. 3rd degree black belts receive $3,000, 2nd degrees receive $2,000, and 1st degrees receive $1,000.
Congratulations to all of our graduating seniors. We are very proud of your achievements!
