Zounds! Ticking, clicking, humming, whirring, bubbling and twanging vibrations where many of the sounds emanating from the halls of Vero Beach Elementary this summer. Over 225 students were busy applying scientific methods to solve experiments and design problems during a three week Science Summer Camp. The focus for each grade level was on a specific topic. Second graders studied sounds, vibrations and even created their own musical instruments. Third graders were chemists with mystery powder experiments, trying to identify the chemical with properties and reactions. Fourth graders were design engineers working with force and motion, designing vehicles that had to move, carry loads, and utilize various forces to overcome gravity and air resistance. Fifth graders were measuring time: using shadows, cycles of the moon, water clocks, and actually building ticking clocks with pendulums.
The camp was funded through Title I funds, and participation was open to all students who were entering 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th or 5 th grade and were from Vero Beach Elementary School or St. Peter's Academy. Mrs. Bonnie Swanson was the principal supervising the camp, along with Ms. Allene Moorehead who was the Title I Coordinator directing the curriculum components. Seventeen teachers were delivering the units in small groups, with two Fine Arts teachers supporting the integration of science and math with the arts. Title I funds also allowed for ESL teacher assistants to help during the lab experiments.
Great fun and exciting learning was had by all, with the intent that these students will be able to carry over transfer of learning to their fall school curriculum goals.
