What happens when a tired and hungry mercenary soldier fleeing for his life, inadvertently climbs up the balcony of an incurably romantic and idealistic young woman who thrives on paperback novels, daydreams and chocolate creams? Toss in a brutally handsome fiancé with a wandering eye and an impudent maid with an eye towards marrying into an aristocratic future, and you've got a recipe for plenty of laughs and an afternoon of fun at the Pineapple Playhouse. Saturday, February 24, 2007, the Pineapple Playhouse Reader's Theatre will present George Bernard Shaw's, ARMS AND THE MAN.

The free presentation of this classic Shaw will begin at 2 p.m. at the Pineapple Playhouse, located just off US1 on Weatherbee Road in Fort Pierce (just north of Midway Road). A Reader's Theatre production is different from a regular 'main stage' show in that, the actors are seated on stage throughout the performance, and reading their parts from scripts. It's a wonderful way to experience a different kind of theatre, and provides an opportunity for individuals who may not be completely comfortable with being on stage a perfect alternative.

Known for its cutting social criticism mixed deftly with fine comedy, Shaw's ARMS AND THE MAN attacks the romantic illusions of war, exposes the relationship between upper and lower classes, and pokes fun at social wrangling and the phoniness of high society. Written when he was only 38 and first performed in London in 1894, ARMS AND THE MAN is one of the Irish-born Shaw's earliest plays. The play's wittiness and underlying themes still work more than a century later.

The 2 p.m. Reader's Theatre presentation is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be served and reservations are not necessary.
