In its 24th year, Riverside Theatre's SummerStage program provides talented youth the opportunity to participate in a full scale musical production on the main stage in the six week long experience. "Hot Mikado," this year's show, will be presented at Riverside Theatre July 17-27, and is one of the most demanding shows produced to date by the program. The selection of "Hot Mikado," based on the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, "The Mikado," presented director Kevin Quillinan and his production team of music director Karen Wiggins and choreographer Deborah Quillinan with challenging music and dance material. The modern, jazzy music presents vocal challenges and calls for complicated dancing in styles ranging from jazz to swing to tap. Strong comic actors are also needed to handle the wacky silliness of the farcical script.
A cast of 35 youth have been selected to meet the challenges. In addition to local high school students who have appeared in many productions, "Hot Mikado" also boasts the talents of several college students hailing from schools including William and Mary, Ithaca, Northwestern, U Mass Amberst, Elmhurst, Rollins and Indina River Community College. Many of these students are majoring in music theatre and theatre with aspirations toward careers in the performing arts.
Theatre goers will not be disappointed in the resulting product. Flashy and fun, "Hot Mikado" is the show to see this summer. Performances are July 17, 18, 19 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and July 20, 26 and 27 at 1:30 p.m. on the Stark Stage of Riverside Theatre. Tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for students. Call the box office at 231-6990 or 800-445-6745 to purchase tickets or reserve them online at riversidetheatre.com. This program is made possible through generous funding from the Richardson Family Foundation.
