While some people in northern states are shoveling snow, Floridians are enjoying the beach.
However, residents in Vero Beach are being deprived of a fun-in-the-sun staple – beach volleyball.
Officials had the volleyball posts and nets at South Beach restored within a few months after hurricanes Frances and Jeanne swept through the county in September 2004.
And the twin storms, at a category 2 and 3, respectively, were much stronger than Hurricane Wilma’s category 1 winds as she struck Vero Beach in October.
Understandably, electricity and storm debris cleanup were top priorities this year as they were in 2004.
But now that the lights are on, most of the yards have been cleared and residents are enjoying the beach, shouldn’t our friends and family be able to enjoy the only true beach volleyball courts in the county?
The structure of South Beach has changed because of Wilma’s winds and high tide, but the volleyball poles are up (unlike after last year’s storms). All they need is nets.
The four poles sticking out of the sand are eyesores to a beautiful beach.
Putting nets on the poles and making the courts playable would not only give beachgoers another opportunity to enjoy the city’s free park, but also would make the beach more appealing.
