In spite of foul weather warnings, the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday provided sunshine and kind winds for the participants in the annual Indian River County Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade today.
Colorfully decorated floats, cars and buses bearing inspirational signs or group names, motorcycles, schools, churches, service and social organizations moved orderly, patiently, along the three-and-a-half-mile route, as did the Indian River County school board and superintendent, and a few political groups and candidates. There was music, recorded and live. There were American flags blowing in the breeze.
Sheriff's deputies kept things progressing as lines of waiting autos watched the parade pass by.
And then there were the marchers of all ages, races, backgrounds, religions, traveling and laughing together -- a perfect tribute to Dr. King's message of unity.
Greetings, waves and smiles were exchanged by parade people and those lining the roads, including a couple of "Smile and toot your horns -- it's a parade!" Candy was tossed for the kids, both big and little, making tossers and catchers both happy,
When the parade units were dispersed at the Gifford Neighborhood Park, smells of fried chicken and fish and barbecued ribs enticed folks to the food vendors for soul-satisfying "pigging out." After all, that's an important part of festivals and parades.
Many Gifford churches presented colorful or sobering parade floats, but churches from the other areas of the county were scarce, represented by only the Community Church and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Where were the other churches?
Highlands Elementary School marched. So did Beachland and St. Edward's and Dodgertown, Citrus, Fellsmere, Pelican Island, Rosewood Magnet, Liberty Magnet, Thompson Magnet, Sebastian River Middle School, Oslo Middle, Sebastian High School, Vero Beach High School. Where were the other schools?
There are many reasons for fun and fellowship on the holiday celebrating the life, teachings and sacrifice of Martin Luther King, Jr. Next year, let's make this important event even bigger.
