A Day without Water - Life Challenges - Being Prepared
So the day started out just fine. My wife and I got up about the same time (7:00) and said Good Morning to each other which lead to the traditional morning kiss. This followed with how was your rest, which started the conversation about dreams. I told her that my dream went like this - I was one of 3 pilots on a space ship that docked at the Space Shuttle. I guess I am watching too much NASA Channel. Prior to my sleep time I read a little. My book of the week is Beverly Hills Dead by Stuart Woods, but I was tired last night and just went to bed. So I guess my mind went to the last thing I saw on TV(the NASA stuff). There's more to that story but this is about the next set of events.
So this morning we turned on the TV and watched some of the political news. My wife decided she was having cereal for breakfast and I jumped on the computer. I do that a lot these days because I am looking for a job. So after her breakfast she said she was going for her shower.
Now usually we do that together (shower) but I was on the computer and knew that I was going to mow the lawn after she left for work, so I would wait to shower later. Lesson learned. Don't wait. Take another one later if you can.
That's what I said. She is working and I am not so I get to do all the chores around the house which include feeding myself at lunch and getting dinner together for the two of us. It's a challenge but I manage, most of the time.
So she left and as she was heading out the door she turned on the dishwasher. At that point I headed to the garage and started up the lawn mower. I do my neighbors yard and ours. She is a great neighbor and someone stole her lawnmower so I volunteered to do hers when I do mine.
I accomplished the task and came in, prepared to jump in the shower. I had worked up a pretty good sweat and was really looking forward to that shower. Have you guessed the punch line yet? NO Water!
Well we have been having a cash flow challenge over the last few months. Remember I said I was not working. Any way we put our bills in some organized fashion based on priorities we felt made sense. After all we have a basic understanding of how things should get paid. The mortgage comes first (shelter), then food, and so on. Somehow we missed the one on water, I guess.
My wife is at work so I will not know, until she gets home, why we have NO WATER, as she pays the bills. It's just something she likes to do and I passed that duty gladly, At my prior job I paid the company bills and let go of our bills. That keeps me in the dark so I don't worry about the bills, which I guess is OK as long as they get paid.
So I am sitting in front of the computer writing this story and thinking about NO WATER and what to do when you have no water. After all, the dishwasher had to be turned off so the dishes are still dirty. I can't take a shower so I am dripping wet, sort off. I used a towel to dry of but I sure would like to shower off.
I am contemplating riding my bike over the bridge and using the showers at the beach. I like that idea but then I will need to bike back and thus generate another sweat, so that kind of defeats the purpose of going over there. Did I forget to mention that my car has no gas in it, and I have no cash, so I cant use it. I prefer not to use our only credit card unless there is an emergency, and this is not an emergency it's just an inconvenience, in my book.
As I continue this story I am thinking about the bathrooms. Can"t use them as there is no water to flush and I can't wash my hands after the deed. I can't make dinner, as I need water to boil the noodles, for spaghetti. Thank the lord I put water in the cat bowl last night so he at least can have a drink, when he needs it.
It's not all bleak. The good news is that the automatic icemaker bin if full. The not so good news is the water dispenser that's built into the fridge doesn't work, NO WATER, and we have no bottled water. But I can still make cocktails and it is after noon.
And if it comes down to it I can go across to my neighbor and borrow some water if I get in a pinch. But how embarrassing is that. A cup of sugar is one thing, but borrowing a few gallons of water! I thought you only did that during a hurricane.
So I am not writing this story to whine I am just telling you about a day without water. My wife and I will (hopefully) laugh about it later. She has a great disposition and we get along really well. We have been in some interesting situations, which continue to challenge us but we always seem to manage and most of all we still laugh at each other and many life test we have experienced.
So in closing I say that we know some people who are not as well of as we are and I say I would not want to be in their shoes. I see pleas for help on the TV from lots of folks who are in 3rd world countries who have NO WATER because it doesn't exist. All I need to do is pay the bill and I'm back in the saddle again.
And by the way we had talked about getting rain barrels set up a few weeks ago. I saw something in the paper weeks after my wife and I had talked about watering the grass and flowers with water from the rain we could collect in barrels. She was not so enthusiastic then but I think she will be an easy sell now. I could have used some of that water if the barrels were in place. But I have a good neighbor and she will help us thru this time. I may even take a shower over there but I will wait for my wife, so she can go with me. Don't want to start any rumors in the neighborhood.
Enjoy your water and don't forget to pay that bill. They do shut it off. I know!
