Garden Clubs a plenty in Indian River County
Contributed by: Patricia Prange on 7/31/2006

Garden Club activities are practically nonexistent during the summer months in Florida, but the Garden Club of Indian River Co. (GCIRC) has faithful members who meet at the Garden Center once a month to pull weeds, trim plants and keep an eye on the garden. The chairman in charge of this activity is Betty Griesinger of Poinsettia Circle and her assistant is Cindy D'Amico of Allamanda Circle. GCIRC has nine circles and each month they meet early in the day and work for about two hours, until the heat sets in! Although the GCIRC has a regular yard service for mowing, these monthly work days put the finishing touch on the landscaping. In July the workers who attended the work day were Kathy Althoff and Connie Derman of Jasmine Circle; Bonnie Veron and Sandy Lane of Poinsettia; Nat Jackson of Seagrape Circle; Margaret Hambleton of Hibiscus Circle.

Plans are underway for programs open to the public which have been quite popular in the past. A series of horticulture programs will be the feature, possibly some held on Saturdays or in the evening. Details will be available soon. The Christmas Boxwood Tree program will again be held in early December led by Jennifer Sauter of Jasmine Circle. She has led this program for over ten years and the attendance is always great. It is a hands on workshop and everyone goes home with a fresh boxwood tree design . For more information on the GCIRC, check out their Website - gardenclubofirc.org

The Pelican Island Garden Club has had a civic project for almost ten years that has made a big impact on Sebastian. It is the "Garden Club Park" located on Barber Street. It started out with a lot of sandy grass areas around a small pond and a few straggly plants. Now it is a lovely, shady area with paths, plants and trees. The gazebo which was added in recent years makes a quiet place to watch the water fowl and butterflys. The club has their annual plant sale there each year.

Anyone in Sebastian who might be interested in joining the club should mark their calendar for their annual Membership meeting which will be held on Monday, October 16th at the North County Library at 1:30 a.m.

Summerplace Garden Club is made up of members who primarily live on North A-1-A in the Summerplace area. They meet in members homes and enjoy a variety of programs and projects each season. They have a flower show each year and invite area Flower Show Judges to judge it.
Any of the housing developments in Indian River County, who have their own garden club group, are invited to submit information for this column to pattysposies@bellsouth.net
