Garden Club to Offer College Scholarship
Contributed by: Patricia Prange on 5/15/2007

As the garden club season draws to a close, the Garden Club of Indian River County (GCIRC) will be making plans to offer a college scholarship to a student from Indian River County who has a certain grade point average and is in need of assistance with college expenses. The student will be selected from a group recommended by the faculty of the IFAS/University ofFlorida Horticultural Research Center in Ft. Pierce. TheGCIRCCivic Chairmen Nat Jackson and Lynn Burns will be in charge of this project, which will be in place in time for the 2008 fall term.

The Civic Committee is also undertaking a project to help the Vero Beach Theater Guild as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary. Landscape designs will be made to update the plantings at the front of the building and GCIRC will fund these renovations.

The triangle park at the western edge of Royal Palm Blvd. and Royal Palm Place was landscaped for the 25th anniversary of the Garden Club (over 30 years ago) and a plaque was placed there. Needless to say, over the years the condition of the plaque has deteriorated. As a final Civic Project for this season, the GCIRC will provide the funds to repair the plaque and will purchase a large landscape rock to which it will be attached and replaced in the park.

National Garden Week, June 3rd - 9th, will be celebrated by the circles of GCIRC by presenting a plant or floral design to an area government office, service organization or civic organization. This is a nation wide celebration by National Garden Clubs, Inc. Some of the groups to be honored include Hospice House, Redlands Migrant Day Care, Indian River Memorial Hospital, Hibiscus Children's Home, the Main Post Office and ARC. We hope those recognized will spread the word about our favorite past time, gardening.

Carissa Circle of GCIRC has undertaken a summer civic project at the request of a Hospice House volunteer who will be out of town for the summer. Kathy Siegle has been volunteering at Hospice House for several years and when she attended our Flower Show in March, she spoke with a Carissa member about the possibility of some garden club members helping her out with the chore of re-arranging flowers that are donated from parties, funerals and weddings and placing them in patients rooms. The members will also replant some of the dish gardens that have been donated.

The Installation Luncheon for GCIRC was held at the Garden Center, which was "dressed up" for this special occasion by the Social Committee, headed by Alice Yarick of Hibiscus Circle. Centerpieces were made by a special group of volunteers under the direction of Patty Prange. Melba Campbell, the immediate past FFGC District X Director and a member of Carissa Circle, presented a delightful "light show" as she installed President, Karen Vatland of Poinsettia Circle; Vice President Jan Schubert of Carissa Circle; Recording Secretary, Kathy Althoff of Jasmine Circle, Corresponding Secretary, Sue Bradley of Carissa Circle, and Treasurer, Jack Phillips of Bougainvillea Circle. Special guests at the luncheon were Gardenfest sponsors and advertisers.

Retiring Office Manager, Bettye Talley, was presented with a framed certificate of appreciation for her many years of service to GCIRC. She was also given a gift basket and gift certificate.

On other garden club news, the Pelican Island Garden Club celebrated the 10th anniversary of Garden Club Park in Sebastian by dedicating a beautiful sign given to them by the City of Sebastian. Their original sign had been destroyed by the 2004 hurricanes. The area around the new sign was landscaped using a plan created by Trudi Hertling and Sheila Heberling. The club also held their annualflower show with Patty Prange and MelbaCampbell providing critique of the lovely designs.

This will be the final column for this correspondent. Many thanks to all who contributed news. This HUB column will be written during the garden club season by Joan Black of Allamanda Circle. She has great expertise in the field of computers and websites and I'm sure she will be able to provide photos of all our activities too. Have a great summer and don't forget to dig in the dirt for relaxation.

Another informative article Patty! Your presence in the news will be missed, even though Joan will do a great job too.
