Seen Going Green? Child-friendly plantings
Contributed by: Nancy Stiefel on 1/10/2009

The Green Sanctuary Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach planted a Florida native plants garden at the main entrance of the Bridges Early Learning Center located on its campus. They wanted to get rid of the grass to avoid the noise, danger, and air pollution of lawn maintenance equipment near the preschool. They also wanted to attract butterflies for the children to see and enjoy. In addition, since nativeplants require less water and fertilizer, the garden will save money. Barbara Lipton, a Florida master gardener, spearheaded the project, chose the plants, and helped with the soil preparation and planting. Other plants in the garden are penta, lantana, beach daisy, necklace pod, and firebush.
