DIET: TO CHEAT OR NOT TO CHEAT
Contributed by: Bonnie Pfiester on 9/24/2009

Q: Is it ok to cheat on a diet occasionally? Have a cupcake once a week? - Denise, Vero Beach

A: It depends on your goals. If you are trying to lose weight and track your calories, my suggestion is to budget room so you can cheat without it affecting your goals.

You have two choices. You can either shave off 50 calories here and there throughout the day to make room for the extra calories or you can plan an extra cardio to cancel out the additional caloric intake.

Budgeting calories is no different than budgeting money for something you want to buy. You either have to discipline yourself to save money over a period of time or work more in order to afford your purchase. Either way, if you are dieting and actively working toward a goal, you have to stay accountable, count the extra calories, and balance your caloric account.

Beware: Although you can cheat and stay on your diet, the problem with cheating is it's contagious. Before you know it, we go from cheating on our diet once a week to cheating every other day. If you cheat, it should be a special treat. I define treats as foods or drinks you really enjoy that have no nutritional value. Whether it's a cupcake or a glass of wine, if you are treating yourself to something special everyday it's no longer a treat, it's no longer cheating - it's just a bad habit.
