Santa Even Visits Homeless People
Contributed by: Sonya Morrison on 12/17/2007

The Christmas celebration for our local homeless is an annual tradition at The Source. And the community goes all out to ensure that it is a very merry one for our neighbors in need.

Adopt-a-Family gives a Christmas shopping spree to needy families. This year, thirty families from The Source were selected for a night of holiday treasure hunting. Our parents are so excited to be able to give their children "just what they have asked Santa for." Shelley, one of our yuletide shoppers, beamed, "Things have been so hard on us all year long. I can't say how much this means to our family. I am just so thankful. I can't wait to see their little faces on Christmas morning."

The Source is also a Toys for Tots distribution center. As I write, the classroom is filled with bags and bags of gifts for our youngsters. One by one, needy mothers and fathers are coming in to collect toys for their children. What a blessing it is to see the gratitude on their faces as they return home with glee to hide the presents they thought they would not be able to afford this year.

You would hardly guess that the facility on Commerce Avenue is an outreach center for homeless people. Shining decorations and delectable goodies make the halls seem much like being home for the holidays. Poinsettias adorn all of the tables. Scrumptious smells waft from the kitchen. Bright smiles and warm hugs make everyone feel like family. Even the grinch gets a tingle in his heart.

Friends of The Source from all across the county drop in with food, blankets, wintery clothing, and cheerful packages for the less fortunate in our community. Michelle is wearing her santa cap with the glittering stars today. Children are decorating the walls with candy canes and coloring book pages. The Spirit of Christmas fills the building and brings a tear to the weary eye.

All of the hubbub will culminate in a wonderful Christmas Day celebration. Our very own rag-tag Christmas choir has been rehearsing all month for a grand performance. Doors open at eleven o'clock for brunch and the presentation of the Gospel story. The gift exchange will follow, with Santa himself doing the honors.

You, too, can participate and make the season merry for our most needy neighbors. Gift ideas can be found on our website at www.IAmTheSource.org.
