My mother, My friend
Contributed by: Stephanie Chisholm on 4/14/2006

Joyce Krauss gave birth to bouncing baby girl on September 4, 1978 when she was 17 years old. Although she was young she didn't let that stand in her way of becoming the best mom around! My mom worked very hard while I was growing up. In my younger years she worked while completing college and still was there for me to do the regular kid stuff like going to camp, being a girl scout and attending school function.

In 1986, she decided that we needed a change, so we moved from Michigan to Vero Beach. The move to Vero was a big change for both of us, up until that time we had lived with my grandparents, so for the first time it meant we were really on our own! My mom got a job with security at a local gated community but soon found that working one job was not enough to make ends meet and although I was young she had to take on another job. So that meant raising a young child alone and working two jobs.

In 1990 she met the man I happily call my father, Jeff. I know that Jeff completed my mom and made her totally happy! Jeff and Mom were married in 1991. For the first time since 1986 my mom was able to work one job and actually enjoy being a mom and a wife. Some of my fondest teen memories are playing soccer in the backyard with them!

Then in 1996 I met the man I would marry later in 1997 and in February of 1998 my mom became "Memaw" to Sasha. My mom's eyes still twinkle when she sees Sasha. I remember her telling me that there is nothing like seeing your baby having a baby and that she never knew she could love another being as much as she loved Sasha!

In 1999 our family suffered a devastating blow when Jeff was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. My mom and Jeff fought the cancer but their time together was cut too short by cancer, Jeff passed away 3 days after their 10 th wedding anniversary in 2001.

Since 2001, I have seen my mom overcome the death of her soulmate and become stronger than I ever knew was possible. She works hard everyday and never seems to slow down! She is always there when I need her and doesn't think twice if I call her for help!

I love my mom! I am so proud to call her mother and friend!!!
