Disaster Response Group Calls for Volunteers

Vero Beach, FL: Indian River County's Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (IRC VOAD) - a community response group started in July - has issued a formal call for volunteers in case Tropical Storm Ernesto hits the Treasure Coast. As part of their participation in IRC VOAD, the United Way of Indian River County has agreed to take on the role of ESF 15 which coordinates volunteers and donations. If you, your workplace, civic or church group would like to lend a hand in case it is needed, please call the United Way, 772-567-8900 to register. United Way phone lines will serve as a volunteer call center from 9 AM to 5 PM daily, until further notice. Health and human service agencies in Indian River County with volunteer needs may list their project with the United Way by calling 772-567-8900. United Way will match volunteers with agencies needing assistance.

As of late Monday afternoon the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and hurricane shelters have not been activated. Emergency Management Services advises residents to log on to www.irces.com. Residents call also tune in to 93.7 FM, 97.1 FM, 1490 AM, cable channel 13 in Vero Beach and channel 27 in Sebastian for the latest updates. 2-1-1 Information and Referral can also answer general questions.

In case it is needed, front line responders, American Red Cross, Treasure Coast Food Bank and the Salvation Army are making the necessary preparations to open shelters and provide meals. The local chapter of the American Red Cross may be reached at 772-562-2549, the volunteer coordinator for the Red Cross is Carol Billet. You may reach the Salvation Army at 772-978-0265. For general information regarding community response, please call the EOC hotline at 567-8000. United Way of Indian River County encourages anyone who feels the need to talk to a trained professional on how best to deal with strain of this situation: to contact the Mental Health Association Crisis Line at 772-562-2000.
