ST. LUCIE COUNTY COMMISSIONER CRAFT PRESENTS MUSEUM $100,000

NORTH HUTCHINSON ISLAND - In an effort to improve public facilities through the arts, St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Craft presented a $100,000 Art in Public Places grant to the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum on Friday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. at the museum.

"The SEAL Museum is one of St. Lucie County's greatest historical jewels. I can't think of a better place for us to showcase some of our artistic treasures as well," said Craft, who also serves as the Board's liaison to St. Lucie County's Cultural Affairs Council.

Given by the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners, the grant will be used to create a Navy SEAL Memorial Sculpture on the museum grounds, which was once the training site for hundreds of thousands of Navy Frogmen in the early 1940s.

St. Lucie County's Art in Public Places Program was created in 1999 by County Commissioners as a way to generate revenue to purchase and place art at publicly-owned facilities. The ordinance allocates 2 percent (not to exceed $100,000) of the funds from any County capital projects worth more than $50,000 into the Art in Public Places fund.

The Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is the only museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Navy SEALs and their predecessors, including the Underwater Demolition Teams, Naval Combat Demolition Units, Office of Strategic Services Maritime Units, and Amphibious Scouts and Raiders. Located in Fort Pierce, Florida - the birthplace of the Navy Frogman - the Museum promotes public education by providing the opportunity to explore the history of the Navy SEALs in an atmosphere of respect and honor.
