Story

You never think it will happen to you.....
Contributed by: Donna Roberts on 5/9/2008

During Red Cross month in March, The North Treasure Coast Chapter held a free CPR seminar. Several residents from Grand Harbor attended the class and gained some valuable skills. Less than a week after the class Anne Gray had an opportunity to use the skills she had learned. During her weekly bridge game, one of the ladies began choking. Anne immediately responded with the skills she had learned in the CPR class. She identified herself and her training and then proceeded to administer 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts. She was successful in dislodging the object causing the choking. Anne said she felt very confident in being able to help after the training she had.

When a victim begins to choke and continues to cough, these were the exact steps to follow. Encourage them to keep coughing and make sure they are not left alone. Ms. Gray followed the guidelines they were taught in the American Red Cross CPR class to make a difference. Remember - these easy to learn skills can and do save lives - a friend, a family member or maybe even your own.

From June 1 through June 7 The American Red Cross North Treasure Coast Chapter will be offering free CPR Training in the Vero Beach and Ft. Pierce centers. For information and registration, call 772 562 2549 in Indian River County or 772 461 3950 in St. Lucie County.
