Do you remember the excitement building during the last days of school? Freedom! Being your own boss! No one to answer to! It was exciting for a while, wasn't it?
But then, just as boredom was about to set in, the anticipation of camp created another kind of excitement. A week away from home. Making new friends and sharing secrets. Swimming, hiking, and doing arts and crafts. And, of course, gathering around the campfire each evening -- roasting marshmallows, perhaps making s'mores, and telling scary stories.
Some of the details of "camp" are different these days. "Camp" may be a place to hone computer skills or nurture musical talent. But it is still time away from home, making new friends and learning new skills. The memories often last a lifetime. And the experiences themselves can be lifechanging.
Even in Vero Beach, children grow up in a "concrete" world. They hang out at the mall -- or McDonald's or a skate place. Imagine the thrill of first-time experiences in the country -- hiking through a forest, boating on a lake, even horseback riding.
The Salvation Army in Indian River County sends children to Camp Keystone in northern Florida. However, this year the camp funds are nearly depleted. Will you help send a child to camp? Scholarship checks may be made out to The Salvation Army of Indian River County and designated for camp. Mailing address is P.O. Box 2864, Vero Beach, FL 32961.
