GIVE YOUTH GUIDANCE KIDS A GOOD START AT SCHOOL
Contributed by: Jan J Binney on 7/10/2008

Youth Guidance needs school supplies to help the K-12 children the agency serves show up on the first day of school with the supplies they need. All 700 at-risk children are on free or reduced cost lunch; their families do not have disposable income to purchase supplies their teachers require. According to Executive Director Barbara Schlitt Ford, a former public school teacher, "there is nothing sadder than a limited-income child forced to show up and face their new teacher empty-handed while their classmates have backpacks full of new tools for learning."

You can help a Youth Guidance child get off to a great start this year by providing items they need or by sponsoring one or more children for just fifteen dollars each. The items needed most are backpacks (no wheels), wide- and fine-tip washable markers, three-ring binders (1", 1.5", and 2" size), colored pencils (12, 16, and 24 count), crayons (16 or 24 count), large-size crayons in primary colors, Duo-tang folders (with and without prongs, with and without pockets), glue sticks, rulers (metric, inches, and centimeters), blunt and sharp tip scissors, #2 and large pencils, cap erasers, pencil boxes, pencil pouches with holes for three rings, boxes of tissues, Ziploc bags (snack, sandwich, quart, and gallon sizes), antibacterial soap, Dry Erase erasers and markers (black and thin), and Mead or Marble composition notebooks.

Bring supplies no later than July 18 to the Vero Beach offices of Youth Guidance at 1028 20th Place or to the Realtors Association of Indian River County at 2182 Ponce de Leon Circle. Cash donations may be made by check sent to the Youth Guidance office or by credit card by calling the agency at 772-770-5040 or at its website at www.ircyouth.com.

The agency is also actively seeking volunteers 17 years and older who want to make a difference in a child's life to serve as both mentors and occasional volunteers or to provide regular help in the office. Persons interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities or making a donation may visit the www.ircyouth.com website or call Barbara Schlitt Ford, Executive Director, at 772-770-5040 for more information.
