When Treasure Coast Rotary Club of Vero Beach members assist in a local community needs project, they do it in a big way - 2 shopping carts big!
The Gifford Youth Activity Center is collect ing school supplies to help local youth get the 2008 school year off to a good start this fall. The items will be distributed to local youth during the Back to School Bash to be held Aug. 2.
The local Rotary Club members took up a collection of funds for the cause, and a local graphics company supplied much needed pens and pencils.Rotarians Mary Mazzerella and Tracy Carroll, assisted by Austin and Jacqs Carroll, filled shopping carts up at WalMart. "We had to wait a long time to get the non-profit tax approval," said Jacqs,Carroll, a 7th grader at St. Edwards School,"but it was worth it - we saved enough from the taxes to get supplies for two more students!"
Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Rotarians provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto "Service Above Self," Rotary's main objective is service - in the local community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. At weekly club meetings, members share friendship, plan service projects, and learn more about our wonderful community through local and international speakers.
