Treasure Chest opened for Project Lifesaver!
Contributed by: Phyllis Lembo on 6/25/2008

The Treasure Coast Pilot Club has opened its "Treasure Chest" for Project Lifesaver! They say that the third time is the charm - and that's what it took to bring in the bounty for the Treasure Coast Pilot Club's signature project "Project Lifesaver." Not only did the club receive their requested grant from Pilot International, but the amount was doubled! What a proud moment it was to present a check for $10,000 to the Alzheimer/Parkinson Association of Indian River County for this worthwhile cause. Project Lifesaver is a reliable rapid-response partnership with law enforcement to protect the wandering and bring peace of mind to families, caregivers and their community. Those who are touched by this program are victims and families suffering with Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, children with autism and other related brain disorders.

The grant started with a "Wish List" from the Association and proceeded with hard work by the grant committee. The wish list consisted of an additional Emergency Locator System to be purchased for the Sheriff's Department. The search team works in a 360 degree area sweep covering Indian River County. The addition of this third locator system will strengthen their search point areas and complete the triangle approach used when rescuing those who are wearing the electronic monitoring bracelets. The Department will also receive two additional Transmitter and Tester Replacement Kits. The Alzheimer/Parkinson Association obtained 20 Transmitter and Tester Replacement Kits with a year's supply of batteries and straps for future use along with additional miscellaneous and marketing supplies. Because of the increase in needed supplies, the Alzheimer/Parkinson Association has planned three presentations for the summer in order to get the word out about this wonderful tracking system. One will be held at Village Green, one at Gifford Youth Activity Center and the other at the regularly scheduled August meeting. For further information on Project Lifesaver and these presentations, call 772-563-0505.
