Where can pregnant and new moms turn when they need support? The IRC Healthy Start Coalition. This local private non-profit provides a continuum of services beginning with pregnancy until a child is 3 years old.Services include individual and group parenting, nutrition, & pregnancy education, care coordination, breastfeeding counseling, infant safety (safe sleep, SIDS, shaken baby syndrome), Lamaze instruction, sibling integration, mental health counseling, Happiest Baby on the Block baby calming instruction, Medicaid assistance, and referrals to partners in the community that provide food, clothing, domestic violence assistance, homeless shelter, and car seat safety inspection/installation.
The coalition consists of five programs (PiPP - Partners in Pregnancy and Parenting; Momcare, TLC Newborn, Healthy Families and Care Coordination) that work together to make sure each child gets a healthy start from the moment a woman suspects she is pregnant. Information about each program is available on our websitehttp://www.irchealthystart.org/special-programs.php. The Healthy Start Coalition provides invaluable services to women beyond health and parenting support. For example, moms needing clothing and supplies for their newborn are assisted or connected with charitable organizations that provide them. Moms needing help reaching their families outside the state as they flee abusive relationships receive transportation support so they can be safe. The Coalition'sprograms are funded through state grants and Coalition fundraisers such as the Beachside ½ Marathon on October 17. Your support as a runner or volunteer can help the Coalition to continue to make a difference in the lives of women and children in our community. There will also be a Fun Run, so children can help support a cause that helps their peers. This is a fun event for all ages. Mark your calendar and join us in supporting healthy babies and parenting in our community. For more information call 563-9118.
