DFL Off-Leash Dog Park Member Of The Week
Contributed by: Shelly Ferger on 10/14/2009

As a first time dog owner, the Dog Park has been a very special place for both me and my dog, Mick. We have both gotten an education at the park. Mick has learned important social skills. The other dogs and owners have reinforced his dog park training classes. He likes being chased by the other dogs at the park. He is always anxious to play and greet each dog with their owners as they enter the park. I've found a great resource in the other dog owners, who are kind enough to share their experiences in the care and training of their pets. I had a lot of questions at first and luckily they offered great tips. With this wonderful support, I fell so much in love with Mick that I got him a little sister, Lola!

Last year, Mick, alias "surfer dude" and I had a great time at the Howl-O-Ween parade. It was a beautiful day which we shared with our family, there were lots of smiles everywhere. Every dog and owner was a winner. Mick and I are looking forward to this years' parade and introducing Lola to the festivities. I hope Lola will live up to her "showgirl" name.

The 8th Annual Howl-o-Ween Canine Costume Pawrade will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 3 to 6 PM. The event will be at the dog park on the corner of 12th Street and 16th Avenue in Vero Beach. The Pawrade starts at 4 PM. Past events have attracted more than 300 spectators and 75 dogs in costume. This year's event will be even bigger and better.

This year, the event will add the first ever Pet Expo where businesses may exhibit their products and services. Several levels of sponsorship and exhibit space are available plus businesses can place ads in the Event Program.

The event is free to the public and will kick off a New Expanded 4 ½ acre Dog Park membership drive. All parade entries will receive a prize and this year features the first owner/dog look-a-like costume contest. In addition, professional photos will be available by Bob Hemstreet, there will be a DFL Dog Bark Mart Thrift Shop, demonstrations, tricks for treats, and a raffle for a free Dog Park membership.

This year the event adds a"Vendors" section and "Bark Mart" Thrift type sale dog and household items from 11 AM - 4 PM. All proceeds will go toward the Dog Park which helps to fund DFL assistance dog and pet assisted therapy programs.
