EXCHANGE CLUB GIVES FLAGS TO MASTER'S ACADEMY
Contributed by: Jan J Binney on 6/17/2008

Each student at the Master's Academy had an American flag to wave at the school's Liberty Day assembly on June 4, thanks to the Exchange Club of Indian River's Project GiveAKidAFlagToWave. Grant Powell, headmaster, introduced Club President Jeff Smith, 2008-2009 President Scott Wallace, and President-Elect Ed Kay and recognized the Club's contributions to the K-12 school.

Grammar school students honored the military active duty members and veterans present by respectfully holding American flags as they lined the aisle as the adults walked forward as they were introduced. This purpose of this solemn all-school assembly is two-fold. The program highlights American freedoms and traditions through music and oral presentations by the students as they celebrate their upcoming summer liberty on their last day of school.

Project GiveAKidAFlagToWave is a national Exchange Club Americanism project begun in 1981. Local clubs give groups of children 4" x 6" cloth flags as a way to encourage respect, cultivate a deeper sense of patriotism, and heighten their appreciation and admiration for the American flag. The Club also presented more than 100 flags to the children of the Twentieth Avenue Church of God at their Memorial Day service. Other Exchange Club projects to promote Americanism include Freedom Shrine installations, Get Out the Vote campaigns, One Nation Under God, and the Proudly We Hail award given annually to the institution or individual who displays the American flag in an exemplary way.

Exchange Club of Indian River supports local youth-related charities for prevention of child abuse, including Exchange CASTLE and Youth Guidance. Funds for Exchange Club charities are raised through Exchange Club of Indian River Foundation's fund-raisers, including the Exchange Club Blue Water Open Offshore Charity Fishing Tournament held Memorial Day weekend, the annual Charity Reverse Raffle, and an innovative new program that donates a portion of members' online purchases to the Foundation.
