Friends of the Youth Guidance Volunteer Program danced the night away to the music of Stoney and the Houserockers at the 31st Annual Tropical Night party at the Polish-American Social Club in Vero Beach. The proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit the agency's Summer Camp Fund and other special activities for the 700 at-risk K-12 children in the program.
Without Youth Guidance support, most of these children could not attend summer camp. Many come from single-parent families ineligible for public assistance because their parents work at minimal income jobs. If they cannot afford the more than $300 cost per month to provide supervised summer recreation for their child, parents may be forced to leave the child alone during the workday or quit their jobs to stay at home. Thanks to the generosity of the community, Youth Guidance paid for nearly 1900 weeks of positive summer camp experiences in 2007.
Tropical Night raised money for camps through ticket sales, sponsorships, silent auction sales, and a live auction conducted by special auctioneer Wesley Davis. Angel Sponsors include French and Co., Exchange Club of Indian River, and Sunrise Rotary. Exchange Club of Sebastian and John Gibson were For the Kids Sponsors; Kind Heart Sponsors were Barth Construction, Vero Beach Kiwanis Club, and The MacMillan Family. Jeffrey R. Smith CPA, Marllyn Justice CPA, Sebastian River Medical Center, Warren and Karen Lewis, and an anonymous sponsor were Goodwill Sponsors.
It is not too late to sponsor memorable camp experiences for children this summer. One week of camp costs just $75 per child; parents and children choose the camp based on the child's interests and needs from the options available. Donors will receive a letter from each child they sponsor.
Youth Guidance accepts monetary donations of any size to be applied to the Summer Camp Fund. Donations by credit card may be made on line at www.ircyouth.com or by check to Youth Guidance Volunteer Program, PO Box 121, Vero Beach, Florida 32961. Further information about donating or volunteering is available by contacting Barbara Schlitt Ford, Executive Director, at 770-5040 or by email to bford@ircyouth.com.
