Free Teen Writers Workshop September 6
Contributed by: Pam Proctor on 8/11/2008

With competition for college admission at an all-time high in Florida and across the country, you won't want to miss a free Teen Writers Workshop on Saturday, September 6, to learn how to write winning essays for college and scholarships. The workshop will be held from 1 to 4 P.M. at the Richardson Center of Indian River State College's Mueller campus in Vero Beach, under the sponsorship of the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation, College Application Consultants, and Charlotte Terry Real Estate. The workshop is funded by a grant from Quail Valley Charities, Inc.

At the workshop, which is open to college, high school, and home-schooled students, Lisa Zahner, Executive Director of Dollars for Scholars of Indian River County, will share essay-writing tips she's gleaned from reading and rating hundreds of scholarship essays annually. Among her many roles, Zahner is responsible for the recruitment, selection and management of scholarship candidates and recipients of scholarships funded by local donations, bequests and foundation grants. Over the past 43 years, such gifts have enabled Dollars for Scholars to give away more than $6 million in need-based college scholarships to more than 2,300 local scholars. Scholarship information will be available at the September 6 workshop and can also be obtained by calling Dollars for Scholars at 772-569-9869.

Prior to joining Dollars for Scholars in 1999, Zahner worked as a journalist for six years, writing for Florida Today, the Press Journal Luminaries section, Florida People magazine, and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. She also did stints as a tutor for the SAT, ACT and FCAT writing assessment, an experience that paved the way to her current position with Dollars for Scholars. Zahner is a native Floridian and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Florida Atlantic University, where she was a Schmidt Presidential Scholar.

Zahner's workshop September 6 promises to be a highlight of the Teen Writers Workshop, a nationally recognized program that offers high school students a series of half-day seminars with professional poets, novelists, journalists, playwrights, and nonfiction book writers. Since its founding in July, 2000 under the direction of Charlotte Terry and Pam Proctor, the program has conducted more than two dozen workshops reaching more than 1000 high school students in six counties. Along with this year's grant from Quail Valley Charities, past support has included grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida's Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Cultural Council of Indian River County.

To register for the September 6 workshop, please call Pam Proctor at: (772) 231-2221. (www.teenwritersworkshop.com) Registration is required.
