Andrew Molloy presented Youth Guidance Carol Molloy Memorial College Scholarships to college-bound students Kaitlyn Malone, Vanesha Parker, and Kasey Valle on August 6 at the Exchange Club of Indian River luncheon at Culinary Capers. Each scholarship, awarded in honor of Mr. Molloy's late wife, is for $1500. Kaitlyn Malone is a student at Indian River State College, Vanesha Parker at Bethune-Cookman University, and Kasey Valle will go to Florida State University. In a moving presentation, each student discussed their experiences in the Youth Guidance Volunteer Program and told how much this agency means to them.
Family members who attended the presentation included Kasey Valle's foster brother Doug Carlson, Katie Malone's brother Matt Malone, and Vanesha Parker's mother Eugenia Parker, sister Verenthia Parker, and cousin Kaylin Stinson. Mr. Molloy's daughter Carey Hodge and Youth Guidance Executive Director Barbara Schlitt Ford also participated in the awards ceremony.
700 at-risk Indian River County children in grades K-12 are members of Youth Guidance. Its major purpose is to match each child in the program with a mentor, an adult volunteer who meets with the child on a regular basis. The agency also provides one-time activities and outings for the more than 500 children waiting for a mentor. Opportunities for volunteers to participate with these "unmatched" children in one or more of these special events occur frequently throughout the year.
The agency is actively seeking volunteers 17 years and older who want to make a difference in a child's life to serve as both mentors and occasional volunteers or to provide regular help in the office.
