Local pros and tennis aficionados gathered on a steamy Friday morning at Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club in support of the Indian River Tennis Foundation (IRTF). The event was the 2008 Summer Team Tournament. The heat and humidity didn't stop thirty-two players from skilled, good humored competition.
Eight teams each consisting of a pro, two men and one woman, took to the courts playing eight games to result in the crowning of a winning team. "Bossy's Bunch" powered by Gary Boss, Roger Marcil, Paul Leary and Karen Marcil won with the best combined team score.
Also winning were the junior tennis players of Indian River County. IRTF is a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to assist junior player development through access to tennis professionals, coaching, facilities and equipment for those junior players showing promise and financial need. The foundation hopes to raise enough funds to provide scholarships for those junior players who demonstrate academic excellence as well as tennis abilities.
Sponsers for this event were Joe Conrado, John Graney, Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club, Grand Harbor Club and Orchid Island Realty. Future fund raising events are the popular "Friday Night Pro Tennis" held at the Boulevard and the junior clinics at the Mardy Fish Foundation tennis event.
