Nothing To Lose and So Much To Gain
Contributed by: Darlene Forage on 8/7/2008

Volunteerism is very much alive in our nation. People of all backgrounds give millions of hours of their precious labor to community nonprofit organizations across the country. Volunteers benefit our community by helping families in need, adding spiritual and cultural value to our community, distributing food to the elderly, and even assisting our public safety agencies keep our communities safe and secure.

But volunteers need to be encouraged and supported in order to continue their work in our communities. Recent headlines have put a spotlight on the downturn of volunteerism. Rising energy costs and other challenges discourage potential volunteers and make it difficult for public and nonprofit agencies to retain this valuable human resource.

Plumbago Volunteer Services addresses this challenging environment by providing much needed support to volunteers and nonprofit agencies. Plumbago works to enrich the volunteer experience with its partner agencies and organizations and helps to encourage new volunteers and retain our existing community partners. Plumbago Volunteer Services is an umbrella nonprofit community organization that promotes volunteer opportunities for nonprofit organizations in Indian River County. Plumbago offers recruitment, training, and education programs for county residents and works with local organizations to support and enhance the nonprofit community.

Plumbago also works to promote a higher level of volunteerism with the business community. The business community in Indian River County is doing a great job of supporting nonprofits and Plumbago will help facilitate even more business support for the nonprofit realm. One of Plumbago's main goals is to become a recognized resource for nonprofits and to encourage healthy living through volunteerism.
