Fishing with the Squadron

Fishing with the Squadron

The Boys and Girls Club of Indian River County and the Vero Beach Power Squadron scheduled a day of fishing on the Indian River. The event was a success. Just look at the pictures.

The event held by the Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS), led by Chairman Fishing Group, Richard Carlin and Executive Officer, Bill Heimbaugh, organized, sponsored and financed a fishing field trip for the Boys and Girls (B&G) Club of Indian River County on June 27, 2008.

I was told to be there at 8:30. When I got there most of the boats and VBPS group were already onsite at the Squadron Building located at 301 Acacia Road adjacent to the Mac Williams Boat Basin. The boats were tied up to the docks and Carlin was getting into the detail of the day with the group of volunteers that surrounded him.

The big yellow bus arrived at about 9:00 with all the troops from the Boys and Girls Club of Indian River. My understanding is that there were 19 kids, 4 B& G staff and 2 B&G Volunteers. All departed the bus, a picture-taking event took place in the parking lot, and then all headed into the VBPS building.

In the building the Commander passed along words of wisdom and shared some tidbits to consider for the days fishing adventure - rules of the water, help your fellow fisherman/woman as required, watch out for the fishing hooks, have a nice day, a few lessons on Port, Starboard, Bow, Stern and Head, NO standing while the boat is in motion and all participants will wear a life jacket at all times. During the talks everyone worked together and all the youngsters were fitted with jackets. Then it was of to the boats.

At the dock the 7 boats with the respective Captains, and First Mates, provided some additional boat comments to his or her passengers prior to departing the dock. Three to 4 kids per boat, with the B& G staff and of course the Captain and, in some cases a First mate. Fishing gear and live bait shrimp were provided for the fisherman. From what I heard it was a nice day on the water and fish were caught.

On the water the catch and release rule, for fish caught, was applicable for the day. A few photos taken by Syl McCurdy are provided on YourHub at "Got Fish". The smallest fish caught was 5 inches, the biggest fish (ladyfish) was 24 inches and the most fish caught by one person was 5. Notable Fishing Persons are Erick Gutierrez, Cheyenne Brown, Horace Philipes and Cody Scott.

Lunch was provided back at the squadron building. As usual the Chefs and staff, Don Helm, Ed Carr and Bob Scully, were on top of their game. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs with all the trimmings, beans and sodas, were served, and ice-cream bars were handed out after the meal. After lunch trophies and prizes were handed out and more pictures were taken. Some pictures were laid out on a table for the taking. These had been taken earlier in the day and were developed and available to those who were interested.

Trophies & Prizes - Commander Bob McCurdy and Chairman Fishing Group, Richard Carlin orchestrated this action. Some of the kids received trophies for " Smallest Fish Caught, Biggest Fish caught and Most Fish Caught". Prizes for naming boat parts and answering questions in general included a fishing rod and reel setup, hats and fishing related gifts. For a few lucky participants a few "Sunseeker" t shirts were handed out by Captain Woody.

Thanks to all the VBPS Volunteers. It was a fun day.

VBPS Volunteers - Richard Carlin, Bill Heimbaugh, Bob and Syl McCurdy, Ed Carr, Howard Daniels, Jim Kreider, Charles and Janet Stanton, Frank and Pat Bilotta, Woody Boarman, Rob Kane, Don Helm, Joy Rose, Gil and Tricia Walker
