Obedience training can save your dog's life
Contributed by: janet winikoff on 8/15/2007

While most people recognize the importance of having a well trained dog, few realize that basic training can be a lifesaver.

"Each year, thousands of dogs in our community are lost, injured or killed because they dart through open doors," says Connie Ellis, Pet Behavior Coordinator for The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB & IRC). "Teaching your dog to understand a command such as "sit" or "wait" before a door is opened could potentially save his life."

To help keep dogs out of harm's way, The Humane Society will be offering several dog training classes which emphasize such valuable skills. Classes start the week of September 10th and last for six weeks. Dogs eight weeks of age and older may participate.

"Our goal is to teach families how to communicate with their dogs so that they are social, safe and well behaved," Ellis explains, adding that the Humane Society's training also highlights basic dog behavior and body language.

Dog owners have their choice of several convenient sessions: Wednesday mornings from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Make-up lessons and continuing training are also available. The Humane Society charges a modest $35 for a six week session. All classes are offered at HSVB & IRC, located at 6230 77 th Street in Vero Beach. All dogs must be properly vaccinated and sterilized if six months of age or older.

For more information or to register for classes please call (772) 388-3331 ext. 19.
