The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB & IRC) will be hosting an Animal Disaster Preparedness Day on Friday, August 24th from
11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the shelter's Good Shepherd Haven of Hope Adoption and Education Center.
"Experts agree that this year's hurricane season could be highly active, which means we all need to make adequate preparations for both ourselves and our pets," says HSVB & IRC Director of Outreach Ilka Daniel. "Simply put, if it's not safe for you to stay, it's not safe for your pet."
The Humane Society's Animal Disaster Preparedness Day will include videos, live demonstrations and handouts on developing a sound emergency plan, gathering appropriate pet care supplies and making a pet first aid kit. Indian River County residents with special needs, mandatory evacuees and disaster or medical first responders may pre-register their pet for foster care at the shelter and free pet I.D. tags will be issued. Daniel emphasizes that "preparation is the primary key to safety."
Indian River County residents are encouraged to stop by the Humane Society throughout the day to learn more about disaster planning for their pets. Visitors can also learn how they can volunteer with HSVB & IRC to help animals in the event of a disaster. The event is free to the public and no reservation is necessary. The Humane Society is located at 6230 77 th Street, Vero Beach. Please call (772) 388-3331 for more information.
