Ask the Dog Trainer-Pet Loss
Contributed by: Cissy Sumner on 3/14/2008

This is a sad topic, but part of pet ownership. I have had two calls this week from people who have lost their canine companions. The grief for a lost pet is just as heart felt as the loss of a human loved one. Our dogs become part of our families.

There does not see to be very much support for grieving pet owners. There are no pet cemeteries or counseling groups. There are some books available but I think it helps to have some one you can talk to that understands how you feel.

I can remember when my old Jack Russell, Topper died. My husband and I measured our lives together by Topper. The only way we knew how long we were married was by his age. Top was a connection to my deceased father in law. Those two were thick as thieves, sharing hot dogs and lounging by the pool together. The loss of the dog was the loss of a connection to the past.

The wonderful people I heard from this week felt the same about their dogs. All the memories tied to their pets caused smiles and heartache.

Fortunately, for me, my friends and family understood my sorrow. They gave me sympathy and support to help me cope. I hope I did the same for the people that contacted me.

There are things you can do to deal with your loss. The first is to talk about it to other people that can understand. Most dog lovers have had to deal with the loss of a pet. They can offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen.

I encourage you to stay busy. Keep up with your regular activities. The familiarity of a routine will help you. I would also suggest you keep up your dog friends and the related activities. I get a lot of joy from watching dogs and their humans interact and bond. I think all dog lovers do.

People often tell me they will never get another dog. The loss is too painful. I hope they reconsider that thought. Once the emotions of loss have eased, I think another dog is a great idea. All the love and joy can come back to you in a new package. The new dog does not replace the old dog. Topper could never be replaced. However, the new dog is a unique individual in itself. Think about what a lovely life you can offer a new companion. And what they can offer you.
