Ask the Dog Trainer- Obesity in Dogs
Contributed by: Cissy Sumner on 8/29/2008

Did you know over 43% of pet dogs are overweight or obese? You might not think a few extra pounds on Fido are a problem, but obesity can affect you dogs' health. Osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and many forms of cancer are side effects of obesity. Heavy dogs interact less with their families. They are often lethargic which contributes to weight gain.

How can you tell if your dog is overweight? Your dog should have a waist. Its back should not be rectangular. A sagging stomach you can grab a handful of fat from is portly. It should not be difficult to feel ribs under fat. A broad, flat back is another sign your pet is plump. A dog that is the proper weight will have a tucked up appearance. When viewed from above, it will have a waist. You will be able to feel its ribs easily.

If your dog falls into the chubby category, there are many ways you can help him lose weight. Chances are if you feed your dog according to the manufacturers recommended amount, your dog will be overweight. Most dog food companies over estimate the quantity of food your dog needs. They want to sell their product. The more you feed, the more they sell.

A good start is to measure how much you feed your dog. Handfuls vary from person to person. Use a measuring cup and calculate how much you have been feeding Fido. Once you know how much you are really feeding, you can cut back a bit. Another alternative is to change to a low calorie food. Feed the low calorie food in the same quantity or less than the previous diet. Always change your dogs diet slowly so as not to cause an upset stomach.

If you like to give your dog treats, try baby carrot or green beans. I give my dogs low calorie dog food as a training reward. I use a different variety from their regular food so it seems special.

Increase Fido's exercise. Most dogs will not exercise very much if you just let them out in the yard. Put your dog on a leash and go for a walk. Move at a brisk pace. Walking is good for you too. If you cannot walk, throw a ball or Frisbee for Fido. Dog parks can provide exercise for your dog and socializing for you. Be creative and get your dog moving.

Obesity is on the rise for pets and for people. Exercise and diet is the best way to defeat to obesity demon.
