I get calls all the time from people who tell me they have tried everything to train their dogs. They often list off the various things they have tried and it does seem like everything. Unfortunately, one thing they have not tried is a consistent structured dog training program.
Training takes time. You need to have a plan. It helps if your plan is based on the actual science of learning. The plans that work the best are based on facts. They have been tested and developed by certified trainers specifically to help people who are overwhelmed by the issues they face with their dogs.
Every person who calls me about a problem starts by telling me how much they love their pet. I am amazed by the human capacity to love an animal that is aggressive, destructive and causing discord in their lives. I am equally amazed that they do not seek professional help sooner. Due to the frustration involved, many people resist professional training advice and training itself. Unfortunately, the longer a dog practices poor behavior, the harder it is to change.
One of the reasons pet owners become so frustrated is the mistaken idea that dog training problems can be fixed in an hour or less. This can make people feel if they try something once or twice, they have tried everything. Taking a snippet of information and applying to a situation for a brief moment is not going to change a dog's behavior. Many annoying canine behaviors can be changed. Often times, it really is not that difficult to do. It does take a commitment of time and effort to help your dog understand there is a way they can get things right.
There is no magic computer chip you can insert in Fido to get the perfect companion. The impression I get from these frustrated owners is they expect immediate change and lasting results in a few days time. It takes a human twenty one days to change a behavior. I feel sure it takes dogs at least the same amount of time if not longer.
If you are one of those people who feel like you have tried everything, try a professional. Look for trainers with certifications and experience with the problems you are having. Ask about how they would handle your situation. Give a systematic, comprehensive a thirty day training program a try. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results.
