With all the recent press reports about rising gas prices, LogOn was curious when he happened to pass by Mrs. Mac's Fillin' Station in Vero Beach.
I have to admit, I was surprised by what I saw when I walked into the theme restaurant. It was decorated like a vintage gas station with servers in overalls. Oldies music was playing and the joint was hopping. I was thoroughly enjoying the experience, but was the food as good as the atmosphere?
I didn't have to wait long to find out. Offering everything from "Pita Builts" to "Hub Caps" I had much to choose on the menu. ( Pita Builts are overstuffed pita bread sandwiches ranging in price from $4.25 to $5.25 and Hub Caps are burgers that range in price from $3.75 to $5.75).
I ordered "The Satisfier," which is a 1/2 lb. of juicy cheeseburger, topped with the works. I ordered a side of cottage fries and my meal was complete. I couldn't finish all that was on my plate! The "Satisfier" was $5.75 and the plate of cottage fries was $1.95.
I'll admit that I couldn't finish my huge meal, but I had to order dessert when my server told me that the proprietors Jeff and Margie MacFarland made them from scratch. I tried a slice of peanut butter pie for $2.75. It was heavenly!
Other favorites at Mrs.Mack's include root beer floats for $3.25; diesel dogs (hot dog smothered in homemade 'radiator' chili) for $4.50; hot rod cheese cruiser (philly steak smothered in sauteed onions, green peppers, mushrooms, pizza sauce and a choice of cheese) for $6.50, to name a few.
