The Tomasulo's family secrets are out as Dr. Dan comes to Vero Beach for a book signing Thursday, June 12 at 7:30pm at Vero Beach Book Center
"Confessions of a Former Child: A Therapist's Memoir," by Daniel J. Tomasulo (Graywolf Press; $16)
Tomasulo, a licensed clinical therapist with a doctorate in psychology, practices in Red Bank, N.J., but that doesn't mean he has always been a paragon of mental health. As a kid, he thought foods with seeds would get him pregnant and refused to consume them. These days he's a lot saner, but as the book's witty prose reveals, doctors and therapists are human, with foibles of their own. Instead of focusing on his patients, Tomasulo observes his own life to reveal how the individual psyche develops (or fails to) in the sometimes warfare like context of family dynamics. The Tomasulo family lived in Vero Beach since 1973, and Donna Tomasulo Roberts still continues to live and work in Vero Beach. "Dan is one of a handful of humorist/ physiologists in the entire United States. Reading how he can take some painful childhood memories into something everyone wants to read about and laugh at takes a special talent. That's my brother and I couldn't be more proud! If my parents were still around, I am sure they would be too!" Roberts said. The book is available April 29.
