Can Take a Country Girl to the City -- But Can't get the Country Out of Her!
I am Donna Garrett, from Salem VA, am kind of a "reverse snowbird." My son moved here a year or so ago and I have been coming and spending the summers here in his house -- while he goes and stays in my home. It is a wonderful arrangement. I love it, and have finally learned to drive to the Mall, Walmart, and a car shop.
I have survived a terrible divorce after 40 years and have learned to do so much on my own. In other words, I am just growing up and becoming who God intended for Donna to be. By the way, I have found a wonderful church here -- Grace Baptist on 43rd Avenue I may not be able to leave because of!
My brother lives here and mows a yard on the side, in addition to his regular job. I have started going with him and helping -- and have fallen in love with the riding tractor mower! to prove it -- he took my picture.
The mowing episode is not just your usual 12 by 60 yards in subdivision houses. This is a five acre old estate way out in the woods where I once saw a steel cage big enough for a bear trap! When I asked he said it was for wild hogs.
The job takes about 4 hours total. Sometimes we have to divide it into two days if the rain stops us or dark. Palm fronds fall there just like at your house only in mass! My brother takes a trailer and picks them all up and we toss everything in a pile as big as a spring-house! Both Tom and I were born on a farm and it is all old hat to us. We carry gallons of water and power bars prepared to survive the heat. (Oh yes, and big towel!)
The sweetest thing is when we pass and smile at each other! (It kind of takes us back to when we helped out dad...) I love it. My brother tells everyone he has to make me stop! I am 74.................
