In this day and age of "political correctness" with everyone trying not to "offend" anyone else, I say enough is enough. This year, people are actually afraid to say "Merry Christmas" and I think that it's a crying shame.
Here are some actual quotes that I heard around town last week....
"I had to make a bunch of holiday cookies for my kid's class last night."
What? Are you kidding me? Last time I checked they were Christmas cookies.
"Did you put your holiday tree up yet?"
Agian. Are you kidding me? A Holiday Tree? It's a Christmas Tree. Not to mention any name, but there was a local retailer that are advertising "Family Trees". Family Trees? What are you going to do? Hang an ornament on old Uncle Fred this year or stack presents around Nana's feet? Give me a break.
"Do you know where I can get a holiday wreath? Last time checked, if they were made of Christmas tree trimmings and red bows, they were Cristmas Wreaths.
Everyone's in on the action this year. When I was a kid, it was Christmas Vacation, now the scool board is calling it "Winter Break". What winter? We live in Florida. Give me a break.
What's next? Do I have to start calling my Christmas Palms "Holiday Palms" or my Christmas Cactus "Family Cactus"?
Say "Merry Christmas" to someone and watch them light up. I said "Merry Christmas" to one nice lady this weekend and she said "thank you", paused for a second, then smiled and said "Merry Christmas to you too." Go ahead and try it. It feels pretty good.
